2 AMAZING KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:
Keynote #1: Dr. Reagan North
"Motivational Interviewing"
“How often do you help students create a plan for change only to find they don’t follow through? Before students can increase grades, build healthy relationships, or pursue career goals, they must be deeply motivated. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based counseling style that taps into students’ own motivation. Learn practical techniques to help students change for the better. In short, learn to motivate!”
Keynote #2: Chris Perry
"Cultivating Effective Implementation"
“Creating and sustaining educational initiatives has long been a difficult prospect for schools. In fact, research has shown that nearly 70% of educational initiatives/programs fail to be fully implemented and achieve their stated goals , in large part due to inadequate coaching to assist educators with implementing new practices (Lyons, nd). Often this comes in the form of implementation “drift” or discontinued use of the practices over time. For example, for teachers who implement preventive programs, between 41 to 84 percent change components or procedures over time (Tappe, M., Galer-Unti, R., and Bailey, K. 1995). Even for relatively small improvement efforts such as a single student behavior intervention plan (BIP), the majority of BIPs are not implemented as intended for more than 10 days (Sanetti and Kratochwill 2009).
Fortunately, there are solutions to these concerns; primarily in the form of implementation planning and monitoring. For instance, recent research from Alley, Chapman and Schaper found that monitoring the fidelity of the implementation process nearly doubled the probability of implementation, from 35% implementation, up to 65% implementation (2023).
In this highly engaging and impactful presentation, implementation strategies will be shared to improve implementation fidelity and, in the end, student outcomes. Case examples from Kansas schools will be provided, as well as opportunities for individual reflections on current implementation efforts. From large scale, school-wide efforts, to individual student supports; any and all implementation efforts can benefit from a concerted effort to improve fidelity through effective practices. As a result of this keynote presentation, participants will gain a better understanding of both the art, and the science, behind effective implementation.
